Reports say the father of a Nevada teen allegedly shot and killed him over his sexual orientation.
The shooting occurred after an argument escalated between Giovanni Melton, 14, and his father, Wendell Melton, about the teen having a boyfriend, according to KSNV.
“He hated the fact that his son was gay,” Sonia Jones, Giovanni’s former foster mom, said. “I’m sure that inside of his mind, he would rather have a dead son than a gay son.”
One time the teen’s dad, 53, saw the teen with his boyfriend and “pulled out a gun on him,” Jones said.
On Thursday, a report about a domestic disturbance at an apartment in the Las Vegas suburb of Henderson had reached police.
Investigators who responded discovered the teen was in critical condition.
He was quickly transported to St. Rose Dominican Hospital where he died from the injuries.
The 14-year-old lived at the apartment where he was killed by himself, police said.
Officers arrested Wendell Melton on Friday and is currently in custody at the Henderson Detention Center.
His charges include open murder, child abuse and prohibited person possessing a firearm.
